Externalization of Graphic Imagery

In the morning, participants will learn about the Utilization of Art in Trauma Treatment. The afternoon will focus on Externalization as a primary treatment tool for nightmares, intrusive thoughts and flashbacks.

Neutralizing Sensory Reminders – Day 1

Neutralization: A Specific Trauma Treatment Intervention

Sensorial reminders are particularly dysregulating for traumatized individuals. Sensorial reminders of traumatic events should be identified in an assessment process, utilizing sensorial screens.

Once identified, a neutralization process can be implemented in which the reminders no longer activate the individual. Further to this neutralization, a transformation process is initiated in which a new context is created enabling the reminder to not only be neutralized, but transformed.

This training will teach and demonstrate, through case examples, the neutralization method utilized in successful therapeutic intervention for sensorial reminders, sometimes referred to as “triggers”. This workshop will provide skill-based training in a specific therapeutic method, developed and used successfully by the trainer for 15 years.

Sensorial reminders of past traumatic events can be terrifying; producing significant avoidant and phobic behaviour. Historically, exposure therapy has been utilized to address similar phobic behaviours. The methodology involved in exposure therapy can exacerbate traumatic symptoms, re-traumatizing the individual. Important clinical differentiations, criteria for appropriate choices of method and theoretical underpinnings will be outlined.

The Neutralization Process is a four dimensional process guided by a specific protocol and approach. This training will enable participants to think through using this approach with their clients. Participants are encouraged to be prepared with a case example with which to work in a direct application exercise.

Neutralizing Sensory Reminders – Day 2 – Advanced Training

Note: participants must have completed Day 1 of Neutralizing Sensory Reminders

This advanced training will address neutralizing sensitive reminders specific to sexual trauma.

Am I to Blame? Correcting Responsibility Issues

How to successfully address self-blame issues for traumatized individuals. Self-blame often develops into self destructive behaviours. Suicidality, running away, and substance abuse are a few of the many manifestations of unresolved responsibility issues. The message “it’s not your fault” is correct but simply not enough to successfully address these issues. Many youth are triggered by their reminders, and are unable to engage in cognitive therapies.

Effective Symptom Elimination

Beyond management and reduction. This training will give participants tools to intervene successfully with common trauma symptoms such as somatic complaint; anxiety (internal behaviours) and fearfulness (external behaviours)

Integrating Traumatic Events: The Use of Trauma Narrative

Integration of traumatic experience is a goal of all Trauma Treatment. The Trauma Narrative can be utilized flexibly in a number of ways to meet the goal of internalization.

Meet the Trainers

Geraldine Crisci, M.S.W. is a mental health professional with 30 years experience in the field of trauma. She is a private practitioner who provides assessment and treatment to children, youth and their families. She is also a professional trainer providing educational programs to mental health, protective services, law enforcement, medical and other helping profession.

Geraldine developed and teaches the 6 day Trauma Assessment and Treatment Program for Safeguards which has reached 1500 professionals in the past 10 years.

Geraldine has developed protocols for the assessment and treatment of trauma, sexualized behaviour problems and sibling sexual abuse. Geraldine also developed reunification protocol for families.

She has provided support to agencies and families in successful adoption of children from the Protection system. She has worked extensively with residential treatment programs for children and youth for the past 20 years.

She specializes in addressing the impact of trauma on the behaviour of children and youth. To this end she develops clinical programs to provide children, youth and their families with corrective effective therapeutic intervention.

Geraldine is a member of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children (APSAC). She co-authored Paper Dolls and Paper Airplanes: Therapeutic Exercises for Sexually Traumatized Children, which is currently in its 10th year of printing.

Laurel Choat is a graduate of the Toronto Art Therapy Institute and has been on the Board of Directors for the past three years. She has also been a guest lecturer at the Institute and works as an Art Therapist/Child & Family Therapist at The Etobicoke Children’s Centre, specializing in the area of trauma with latency-aged children.

Laurel has also developed and co-facilitated a CBT/Art Therapy group and an Anger Management group at The George Hull Centre for Children and Families for the past five years and was in private practice for six years before joining the ECC full time. With a Design Arts background Laurel worked as an Interior Designer for ten years and was also an art teacher for eight years, working at two private elementary schools in Etobicoke before returning to school to study art therapy. Laurel is a painter, sculptor and stained-glass artist.
